A bio-pesticide bed bug application uses Aprehend, a biological product rather than a conventional chemical spray, applied to the surfaces bed bugs travel across. It is registered for use against bed bugs and applied by a licensed technician using dedicated equipment. The idea behind it is different from a standard spray treatment. Instead of trying to hit every insect directly, the technician lays down narrow treated bands in the places bed bugs have to cross to reach a person, so the bugs pick the product up as they move. That changes what the treatment has to achieve, because the insects that are hidden deep inside a frame or a wall void will still come out to feed and will still cross a treated surface when they do.
The key difference from conventional sprays is contact time. Bed bugs need only brief contact with a treated surface, where conventional sprays require prolonged contact to have an effect. That is what allows the barrier approach to work. A bug walking across a treated band on its way to or from a bed picks the product up in passing, without having to rest on the treated surface. Because bed bugs harbour close together and move along shared routes, the product can reach insects the technician never sees. We do not quote efficacy figures or promise a timeline, and any company that does should be treated with caution. Your technician will explain what to expect in your specific situation.
It is applied as targeted bands in specific locations, not as a general spray over furnishings, bedding or living space.
It suits situations where bed bugs are hiding in places a direct spray cannot reach, which covers most established infestations in furnished rooms. It is often chosen for apartments, condos and multi unit buildings, where the goal is to treat the routes between harbourage and the bed rather than to strip and treat every item. It is also a useful option where the occupants would find heavy preparation difficult, including seniors, people with mobility limits, and homes with a great deal of stored belongings. It can be used on its own or alongside other methods. Whether it is the best approach for your property depends on the building, the extent of the activity and what we find during the inspection.
We will give you a preparation list before the visit, and it is usually lighter than the preparation required for a conventional spray treatment. Typically it means laundering and drying bedding and affected clothing on high heat, clearing enough space around beds and furniture for the technician to reach the areas being treated, and keeping the treated bands intact afterwards rather than scrubbing or repainting over them. The application itself is targeted and reasonably quick in a normal bedroom. Your technician will tell you when it is safe to re-enter the treated rooms and how long the treated bands should be left in place. Follow that guidance rather than cleaning the areas early, because wiping the bands off removes the part of the treatment that is doing the work.
A bio-pesticide application is one part of a plan, not a replacement for the rest of it. An inspection comes first, and a K9 bed bug detection inspection is often how we confirm which rooms or units are affected. Laundering and heat treatment of bedding and clothing still matter, because those items are handled and moved and need dealing with directly. Follow-up visits are used to check the result and to treat again where activity continues, since eggs already laid will hatch after the first application. In a multi unit building, neighbouring units usually need to be inspected as well, because bed bugs move between units and treating one apartment in isolation often means the problem returns.
We are licensed, insured and bonded, and we work in homes, apartments, condos and businesses across the Toronto GTA, Ottawa and Hamilton.
Contact time. Bed bugs need only brief contact with a surface treated with Aprehend, while conventional sprays require prolonged contact. That is why it can be applied as narrow bands on travel routes instead of sprayed over everything.
Preparation is generally lighter than for a conventional spray treatment. We give you a specific list before the visit, usually covering laundry on high heat and clearing access to the areas being treated.
Not the treated bands. Wiping, washing or painting over them removes the part of the treatment that does the work. Your technician will tell you which surfaces to leave alone and for how long.
That depends on the property and how far the infestation has gone. Eggs already laid will hatch after treatment, so follow-up visits are part of the plan. We will not promise a result or a timeline before we have inspected.
Yes. It is often used alongside laundering, heat treatment of items and conventional methods, and after a K9 inspection has confirmed which areas are affected.
