Description: Ants are related to wasps, hornets and bees. ants have reproductive form (or caste) with wings that swarm, In Canada we have approximately 100 species of ants. Many ants will sting or bite with mandibles for defence of their nest.

THE COLONIZING CROWD

BY THE TIME YOU NOTICE, THEY’VE ALREADY SETTLED IN.

GETTING RID OF ANTS:

An ant is a social insect that lives in buildings, colonies etc. Ants may enter a house seeking for food or shelter. They enter through the smallest openings, hunting for food and water. They are in search of either food that is sweet in taste or protein based food. Once they find a food trace, ants will leave make a trail for other ants to follow.

DIFFERENCE BETWEEN FLYING ANTS AND TERMITES:

Ants have segmented waists and termites are approximately of the same width as ants, without pinched waists. Termite’s antennas are straight and ant antennas are bent.

INSPECTION

To find ant nests, their trail is to be followed. Ants lay down a chemical pheromone trail along their routes to and from a food source so that other ants do not pose a problem in following. Inspection of edges, doors, windows and all the areas if kitchen should be don’t to find ants. The easiest way to find a trail to the nest is to see where the ants get their food from. Carpenter ants are nocturnal, so they are to be looked for at night. They can also be seen arising from damaged woods or foraging outside in wood piles and tree stubs. Outside the house, foundation walls and areas of vegetation should be inspected to check the presence of ants. Any item on the ground may be checked to see if ants are there or not. Some ant nests are well hidden.

ANT CONTROL TIPS AND STRATEGIES:

There are two main types of ant problems that are encountered. Some ants live outside the house and some inside the house. Ant controlling strategy should be totally dependent on the type of infestation that has appeared and the type of ant responsible. A magnifying glass should be used for detecting ants. Ants that live outside the house will definitely commute to your home for food. Cracks should be sealed for the prevention of entry of ants into the house. Another thing to be kept in mind is entry points should be cleaned with a detergent to remove the chemical trail pheromone, spray a non-repellent insecticide around the entry points. Ants that live inside your home- they does not come only for food, but some ants will establish a colony inside. Indian colonization occurs year round, especially in cosy climates. Ant species that live in homes include carpenter ants, odorous house ants, thief ants and pavement ants. All these ants may infect food. Ant baits is a successful method to controlling ants. They are safe to use around pets and children and does not pose any danger to them. Ant baits come in gels, granules, or stations.
